VNS position description

The Virtual Networking Support (VNS) Grant aims at promoting virtual collaboration to complement traditional ways of collaboration within the research and innovation communities. This grant intends to stimulate virtual collaboration among the members of the CA17111 Action by designating a VNS Manager. The successful applicant will promote virtual collaboration, such as developing a virtual networking strategy for the Action, taking overall responsibility for Virtual Mobility Grants and supporting the Management Committee in the discussions and planning of virtual events and collaboration activities.

Eligibility criteria

All Action participants with a primary affiliation to an institution located in a COST Full Member country or Cooperating Member, or MC Observers from a COST Near Neighbour Country are eligible to apply for the VNS Grant.

How to submit an application

The applicant needs to encode an application by logging into e-COST and clicking on the VNT Application (selecting Virtual Networking Support grant) and CA17111 and filling it the other information. Please consult Virtual Networking Tools (VNT) User guide for additional information on the submission process.

Evaluation and Selection

According to COST Vademecum, the evaluation of each submitted VNS grant application is performed by a VNT Evaluation Committee which has been appointed by the Management Committee. 

The selection of successful grantee will be based on contributions to the overall objectives of the CA17111 Action and the implementation of the COST Excellence and Inclusiveness Policy.

The evaluation of applications will be performed with the following criteria:

1. Contribution towards the development of virtual networking activities (50 points)

  • Progress towards the Action objectives and deliverables
  • Promotion of COST Excellence and Inclusiveness Policy
  • Stakeholder engagement and promoting the participation of researchers from NNC and IPC (COST Global Networking).

2. Strategy on virtual networking (50 points)

  • A proposal for the strategy on virtual networking
  • Approach for coordinating Virtual Mobility Grants (managing calls, evaluation process and supporting beneficiaries)
  • A plan for COST Action events that will be held online and how they fit the overall Action strategy

 After positive evaluation by the VNT Evaluation Committee a Grant Notification letter is sent to the successful applicant.

Grant financial support & duration

The duration of the VNS Grant is from the moment of selection (approx. 30th June 2021) until 31st October 2021. The deadline to submit the report is 15 days from the end of the grant period.

After submitting a report on the activities performed, a gross financial contribution of up to EUR 4 000 will be awarded. It is a contribution that will be paid on personal account. The activation of the grant is subject to availability of funds.  

The COST Association and the Grant Holder of the Action cannot be considered as being the grantee’s employer who shall make their own arrangements for all provisions related to personal security, health, taxation, social security, and pension matters. The grantee must also ensure they have the required technical material/equipment and infrastructure to carry out the activities proposed in their application to the grant.

VNT Grants



Virtual Networking Tools aim to introduce two new types of Grants to build capacity and spread the uptake of virtual collaboration across different research communities, in the form of a pilot scheme running until 31 October 2021. There are two types of Grant available:

Virtual Mobility (VM) Grants - 6 VM Grants available - *CALL NOW OPEN**

These grants aim at strengthening the existing networks by allowing scientists to foster collaboration in a virtual setting, to exchange knowledge, learn new techniques, disseminate the Action results, etc.

Virtual Networking Support (VNS) Grant - *Call closed*

This grant aim at promoting virtual collaboration as a complement to traditional ways of collaboration within the research and innovation communities. This mechanism intends to stimulate virtual collaboration among the members of a given Action.

Important Dates

An open call for the Short Term Scientific Missions  (STSM) of COST Action INTEGRAPE is now available using a 2-step evaluation procedure. With STSMs INTEGRAPE can fund your stay in another institution to undertake collaborative research.

STSMs for this grant period should be performed up until end of September 2021.

An open call is now available for the Inclusiveness Target Countries (ITC) Grants of COST Action INTEGRAPE

If you come from an Inclusiveness Target Country, INTEGRAPE can fund your virtual attendance at the conference of your choice.

The proposed conference must take place before September 30th, 2021.

Application till 4 weeks before scheduled conference date and submission of a scientific report and fee invoice within 30 days after end of conference.
